1965: Nat King Cole dies, week after hopeful outlook

1965: CROONER Nat King Cole has died in his sleep at Santa Monica hospital after suffering relapse from surgery last month for removal of cancerous lung.

The 45-year-old satin voiced Cole had been unaware that his condition became hopeless last Wednesday after appeared to be on the way to recovery.

Hospital authorities said that Cole seemed to be improving a week ago and preparations were being made for his discharge. But he took a sudden turn for the worse.

“His wife Marta was pushing him in a wheelchair yesterday,” a spokesman said. “She knew and we knew but nobody said anything. The spokesman said Cole was avid watcher of television, so no news was released. He believed to the last that he was winning his battle with cancer,” the spokesman said.
