Malta sets sights on ‘e tourism’

The number of tourists visiting the Maltese islands last year went up to 2.6 million

Malta organised the GO Malta E-sports Festival last year which attracted over 350 gamers and more than 1,000 spectators.

Malta aims to open up the islands to e-sports tourism to attract video game players to sports tournaments. E-sport is a form of competition using video games.

Most commonly, e-sports take the form of organised, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players.

The number of tourists visiting the Maltese islands last year went up to 2.6 million, with the number of nights spent amounting to a total of 18.6 billion nights.

Malta is also known as a destination for traditional tourism. It was selected as one of the National Geographic Traveler’s “Best destinations for 2017”.

The destinations were all chosen by the magazine’s editors and fell into one of three categories: cities, nature and culture. Malta came top of culture categories.

At the time, Sport Diver Magazine readers voted Malta 3rd best diving destination in the world, placing just behind the Maldives and Egypt.
