1955: Churchill resigns, Eden to take over

1955: Sir WINSTON CHURCHILL has resigned from his position as Prime Minister.

He will continue to represent Woodford in the House of Commons.

The following announcement was made from Buckingham Palace at 5 p.m. yesterday:

The Right Hon. Sir Winston Churchill had an audience of the Queen this evening and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which Her Majesty was graciously pleased to accept.

The Queen is expected to send for Sir Anthony Eden, the Foreign Secretary, today to ask him to form a Government. The Prime Minister having resigned, the offices of all Ministers are at the disposal of Sir Anthony, though they all technically remain in office to continue their duties until an announcement is made by the new Prime Minister.
