Turkey’s main opposition party leader attacked by group

Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu was attacked on Sunday by a group in the capital Ankara.

The footage from local broadcasters showed attackers were punching and kicking at the opposition leader.

Kilicdaroglu was later taken to a safe house by security officials. Police dispersed the protestors who were protesting and chanting in front of the house.

The assault took place at a funeral of a Turkish soldier who died at a Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) attack on Turkey-Iraq border on the weekend.

Ankara Governorate said in a written statement that necessary precautions were taken for the main opposition leader. Initial security forces were dispatched at the scene after the attack.

Ankara Prosecutor has launched an investigation on the attack.
