Austrian state-owned rail operator, the Federal Railways (OeBB), has seen a record of 261 million passengers during 2018, it revealed in a press release on Friday.
The increase of six percent over the previous year marks strong growth in passenger numbers of 50 million or 25 percent since 2008.
The OeBB said total revenues increased 2.2 percent over the previous year to reach over 5.6 billion euros (6.2 billion U.S. dollars), while its EBIT, or earnings before interest and taxes, was 150.9 million euros (168.2 million U.S. dollars).
It marks the seventh consecutive year a positive EBIT has been achieved.
Company head Andreas Matthae said a key aspect of winning over passengers is investment in infrastructure and new trains. In 2018 alone, 400 million euros (445 million U.S. dollars) was invested in new trains and cabins.
