Vampire keeps readers awake at night

It was on this day in 1897, that Dracula, a novel by Irish author Bram Stoker, was first published.

This weird and startling story of life after death and the strange human vampires who rose from their graves at night, brought terror to the hours of darkness.

Never before, it was said, had fiction presented a story which exercised such a powerful effect on the emotions the reader.

It dealt with the terrible depredations of a human vampire, and his steadily mounting influence over the very lives of a group of people which is combated by the apparently hopeless efforts of a scientific physician.

Few people nowadays are unfamiliar with the central character of this hair-raising story – Count Dracula.

This apparently polished gentleman was in reality a blood-thirsty vampire, whose horrible attacks reduce his victims to madness or death.

Unsurprisingly, the book became a best seller.
