Germany’s Green makes leap, Union and SPD go low in EU elections

The German Green Party made a leap by securing 22 percent of the votes in the German part of the European parliamentary elections on Sunday, according to initial prognoses by local media ARD.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling CDU/CSU bloc secured 28 percent of the votes. The center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) garnered 15.5 percent. Both lost popularity compared to the last election five years ago.

The anti-immigration populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) got 10.5 percent of the votes.
