1989: At 173 people were killed when a Surinam Airways DC8 airliner from Holland crashed near Paramaribo International Airport, the airline said.

The Surinam News Agency said there were only 13 known survivors from the plane that carried at least 187 people.

It said the survivors were in hospital, but their conditions were not known. A statement by the South American airline said there were 13 survivors from 188 passengers and crew members.

But an airline official in Holland said there were 14 survivors from 187 people on board 178 passengers and nine crew members. It was not immediately possible to reconcile the discrepancies.
