Lebanese maritime forces arrest Syrians trying to escape Lebanon by sea

Lebanese maritime forces arrested Wednesday 10 Syrian nationals for attempting to escape Lebanon by sea using a boat, local media reported.

The boat was arrested 3.5 miles away from Qalamoun Sea in northern Lebanon, according to Elnashra, an online independent newspaper.

The arrested people were referred to judicial bodies for further investigations and other legal procedures.

More than 1 million Syrian refugees are registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Lebanon, while the Lebanese government estimated the true number of Syrians in the country at 1.5 million.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun has announced earlier this year that if the international community does not facilitate the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, Syrians will escape Lebanon through the Mediterranean Sea to other countries to run away from the deteriorating economic situation in Lebanon.
