North Macedonian authorities detained 11 officials charged with abuse of office and misconduct, the Ministry of Interior said in a press release issued on Friday.
According to the press release, a police operation was conducted on Friday morning in several locations in capital Skopje from the Department of Organized and Serious Crimes at the Ministry of Interior in coordination with Public Prosecutor’s Office for prosecuting Organized Crime and Corruption.
The criminal charges were filed against the 11 officials, among whom are also former minister of transport and communication Mile Janakieski and five other employees from the ministry.
“The Public Prosecutor issued an order for conducting an investigative procedure against the 11 officials for whom there is suspicion that they have committed the criminal offense of abuse of office, causing budget damages totaling around 2.6 million euros (about 2.95 million U.S. dollars),” reads the press release.
The Interior Ministry said the detention came after several months of investigation.
