Indian gov’t proposes to issue Aadhaar cards to non-resident Indians on arrival

Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Friday proposed to issue Aadhaar cards to non-resident Indians (NRIs) on their arrival in the country.

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number that is given to residents of India, based on their biometric and demographic data.

“I propose to consider issuing Aadhaar cards for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) with Indian passports after their arrival in India without waiting for the mandatory 180 days,” Sitharaman said while presenting her maiden budget in the lower house of the parliament.

Presently, the NRIs with Indian passports are required to wait for 180 days to get the Aadhaar cards.
