Woman appears in court as suspect of false allegations

A 19-year-old woman who cause an international sensation after lodging a complaint with the police in Cyprus of having been gang raped by 12 Israeli youths, appeared before a court on Monday on suspicion of making false accusations.

The woman was arrested on Sunday after police said she withdrew her accusation saying that she made it because she got angry as some of the youths filmed her consensual sex acts with other youths in her hotel room.

Police said the proceedings for her remand in police custody were adjourned for 24 hours, because her lawyer was not present.

The woman arrived in court with her head covered, accompanied by an unnamed woman, who cried from time to time. The suspect listened to the short court proceedings with her head down.

Police said that they will investigate a charge of public mischief against the woman.

All 12 Israeli youths, aged between 15 and 18, were released by Cypriot police and returned to Israel.
