Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival (GFF) announced on Monday the program details of its third edition, which is set to take place in Red Sea resort town of El Gouna next month.
Speaking at a press conference in Cairo, Naguib Sawiris, Egyptian business tycoon and the GFF founder, said the festival has quickly become one of the leading cultural events in the region since its debut in 2017.
“The film industry has a pivotal role in modern societies, as it offers the opportunity to gain new perspectives, inspiration and the possibility to understand and respect cultural diversity,” Sawiris said.
He noted that the festival is successful since the first edition, adding that the festival’s slogan “Cinema for Humanity” is a permanent slogan “because cinema is a strong tool to influence human emotions.”
The GFF, one of the leading film festivals in the Middle East, aims to showcase a wide variety of films for a passionate and knowledgeable audience, while fostering better communication between cultures through the art of filmmaking.
So far, 12 films are participating in the Feature Narrative Competition, 9 films in the Feature Documentary Competition, 23 films in the Short Film Competition, as well as three films in GFF’s Special Presentations program, according to a press statement on Monday by GFF.
The festival will also screen 21 films in its Out of Competition section.
All the films will have English subtitles, while most of them with Arabic subtitles, and most screenings will be followed by Q&A sessions with the filmmakers and members of the cast and crew, in an attempt to connect filmmakers with their audiences.
The festival also includes the CineGouna Platform, an industry-oriented event created to support and empower Arab filmmakers and help them find artistic and financial support.
For the third edition of the CineGouna Platform, the GFF has invited a number of leading regional and international experts in the field of cinema to participate in its various activities.
Within the framework of the CineGouna Platform, GFF will also collaborate with the International Emerging Film Talent Association in the support and sponsorship of two CineGouna Platform participants for their attendance at partnering film festivals and workshops.
