Ajax beat APOEL to secure Champions League group draw

A header from summer signing Edson Alvarez and a strike from new captain Dusan Tadic helped Ajax beat APOEL 2-0 in their Champions League play-off second leg on Wednesday, ensuring last season’s semifinalists of a spot in Thursday’s group stage draw.

21-year-old Mexico international defender Alvarez, who arrived at Ajax last month to replace Juventus-bound Matthijs de Ligt, headed in on 43 minutes to open the scoring, before Tadic fired home from the edge of the area on 80 minutes to give the Amsterdam outfit a 2-0 aggregate victory.
