Albanian parliament engaged in efforts to maintain constitution’s functionality

Albanian parliament remains engaged in efforts to maintain the functionality of the Constitution of Albania, Parliament Speaker Gramoz Ruci told the representatives of a delegation of the Venice Commission during their meeting, a press release of the parliament said on Tuesday.

A delegation of the Venice Commission, an advisory body of the Council of Europe, composed of independent experts in the field of constitutional law, is in Tirana in the framework of the preparation of the draft opinion on the powers of the President Ilir Meta to set the dates of elections in a parliamentary system.

According to the press release, Ruci expressed his gratitude for the quick and constructive cooperation of the Venice Commission with the Albanian parliament.

During the meeting, Ruci praised the readiness of the Venice Commission to commit itself on the requests of the Albanian parliament, the seriousness of the Commission’s experts visiting Albania and the high quality of the Commission’s preliminary and final opinion reports.

“Part of the discussions on the meeting was also some aspects of the political situation in Albania,” read the press release.

During their two-day visit, the delegation will also meet President Ilir Meta, Prime Minister Edi Rama, the representatives of the majority and the opposition at the parliament, including the Special Investigatory Commission as well as the Minister of Justice Etilda Gjonaj and the representatives of the Central Elections Commission.
