Zilina ends undefeated run, Bratislava moves on top in Slovak premier league

After nine rounds without defeat in the Slovak premier football league Fortuna Liga, Zilina lost to Dunajska Streda 1-0 on Sunday to allow Bratislava to claim the top rank.

Dunajska Streda’s Panamanian-born defenceman Eric Davis sent a beautiful long-range shot towards Zilina’s goal in the 22nd minute and the visiting goalkeeper Dominik Holec had no chance of making the save.

Despite their fans being denied admission because of their inappropriate behavior in a previous match, Slovan Bratislava put on a great show in front of the empty stands and upset the visitors from Nitra 5-0.

With Bratislava’s top-scorer Andraz Sporar resting, the Hungarian-born midfielder David Holman stepped in and finished the night with the first hat-trick of his career.

Nitra is still struggling in the penultimate position in the rankings

Trnava took the fourth place in the league’s rankings from their opponents in Zlate Moravce thanks to a 3-1 victory. The 22-year-old Austrian-born Alex Sobczyk scored twice for Trnava in the first half and laid a solid foundation for his team that had to play with a man short from the 77th minute.

Ninth-placed Sered ended their fifth match in a row with a tie. The team from the western region of Slovakia answered Trencin’s late first-half goal in the 69th minute when the Senegalese-born Tidiane Ba set the final 1-1 score.

Alexander Mojzis’ extra-time goal brought a close 1-0 victory to Ruzomberok in Michalovce, snapping the home team’s two-game winning streak. Ruzomberok took seventh place in the rankings from Michalovce in the process.

Last-placed league’s newcomer Pohronie lost their third match in a row, succumbing to Senica 0-1. The Tanzanian-born Akinyoola Samson scored late in the game to bring a much-needed victory to a struggling Senica that hadn’t scored in their three previous matches and occupies the tenth place in the league.
