Putin congratulates German president, chancellor on unification

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Angela Merkel on Unity Day on Thursday, which commemorates the reunification of West and East Germany in 1990.

“The German reunification was a historic event that signalized the end of the Cold War in Europe and started a new chapter in the relations between our states,” Putin said in a message of congratulations released by the Kremlin.

“Constructive development of Russian-German cooperation in various areas and continuous concerted action with regard to topical matters on regional and international agendas serve the fundamental interests of the people of Russia, Germany and the entire European continent,” he said.
