Russian rocket with two foreign satellites launched from Baikonur spaceport

Russia on Wednesday launched the Proton-M heavy-class carrier rocket with European Eutelsat 5 West B and U.S. Mission Extension Vehicle-1 satellites, Russian state space corporation Roscosmos said.

The Proton-M has blasted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Roscosmos said in a statement.

The launch was carried out in accordance with a contract signed in 2016 by the Russian-U.S. International Launch Services joint venture and Eutelsat global satellite communications operator to send the two spacecraft into orbit, it said.

Eutelsat 5 West B is a communications satellite mainly for the French, Italian and Algerian broadcast markets, while Mission Extension Vehicle-1 will deliver satellite life-extension services, it said.
