The Eastern Mediterranean region incorporates the proud and historic countries of Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, Israel and Syria to name just a few.
As you would expect this is an area which has produced some outstanding global sports stars over the years.
Many of them have made it over to US sports like football or basketball to make their mark as well as international tennis. Knowing about the best modern competitors is a great idea for anyone who likes to bet on sports via online sportsbooks including Foxbet sportsbook PA.
Being fully informed means you can bet with greater knowledge and keep an eye out for sporting events in which the top players are taking part.
But who are the modern players from the Eastern Mediterranean who are ripping it up currently?
One of the stars of modern sport from Cyprus is this naturally talented tennis player.
As well as competing in singles tournaments on the professional men’s tennis tour, Chrysochos is also a member of the Cyprus Davis Cup Team. His big breakthrough came in 2014 when he won his first professional trophy – this was the ITF Futures tournament in Egypt where he did not drop a set on his way to victory.
After that win, he has made steady progress within the game and has built up his reputation as a player to watch.
Soccer is a huge draw around the world and even the USA is beginning to get soccer fever. One Turkish player who has done very well for himself in this game is striker Cenk Tosun.
He currently plays for Everton in the English Premier League which is one of the top leagues for soccer around. His move to the top tier of football came after he showed his skill and goal-scoring ability at Besiktas in Turkey. This was back in the 2016/17 season when he netted 24 times!
This alerted Everton who added his firepower and workrate to their side soon after. Tosun also plays for the Turkish national team and has scored 16 goals for them.
One other big Turkish sporting name in soccer is Arda Turan. With 100 appearances for the national team and with 17 goals, he is well loved in this part of the Eastern Med.
He has also seen great success at club level after having started out with Galatasaray in 2005. He soon played well enough to bag a move to Atletico Madrid in Spain where he played over 100 games and scored 13 goals.
Turan then went one better and moved to one of the biggest teams around – Barcelona in Spain. Although he has since gone out on loan to a Turkish side, it is hoped he can find his way into the Barca team when he returns. An attacking midfielder with lots of creativity and an eye for goal, he is certainly one of the best to have come from this region in recent years.
Of course, basketball is a major sport in the US and globally – you might not know this, but it also has a large following in Greece.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is perhaps the biggest player to come from the Eastern Mediterranean to make his mark in the NBA.
He currently plays for the Milwaukee Bucks and is known as the ‘Greek Freak’ for his large 6 foot 11 inch frame. He is not just about size though – this player has great ball handling and speed which has made him a top player since arriving there in 2013. To put his talents and achievements into perspective, he was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2018/19 season in June 2019.
Israel is a country known for its rich sporting heritage and Sagi Muki is keeping that going in fine style. Muki is a Judo expert who competes for Israel in the sport at the various global competitions held around the world.
His most recent triumph was a Gold medal at the World Judo Championship in Japan in August 2019. Muki has also won the European Championships twice and was expected to compete well at the Rio Olympics before injury cut short his chances there. A tough and clever Judoka, much is expected of Muki as his career continues to progress.
Sporting success is in the DNA
As the above shows, there are some fine sportsmen from this part of the world who have lit up their sports in the past and are expected to continue to do so in the future.
All have bags of talent and the skills needed to win more medals and gain more recognition. From soccer to NBA and beyond, the world of global sports has a lot for which to thank the Eastern Med.
