1958: Mass funeral for school fire victims in Chicago

The Our Lady of the Angels School fire in Chicago kills 92 children and three nuns

1958: FLAGS flew at half-mast in Chicago as officials made arrangements for the funeral of the 87 children and three nuns who perished in the fire at Our Lady of the Angels Roman Catholic School.

Flags on all public buildings and many private ones will continue fly at halt-mast until the mass burial on Friday.

Meanwhile. the National Education Association has issued a list of safety measures for schools, including such things as determining whether the furnaces in a school building are separated from classrooms by a fireproof wall, the frequency of inspection of automatic sprinkler systems and electric wiring. and whether doors all open outwards.

The cause of the blaze, which engulfed the whole building in half an hour, was still mystery today.
