Bygones: NHS turn to Cyprus for false teeth

1948: Britain has ordered a mammoth quantity of false teeth from Cyprus.

Four hundred thousand false teeth will be flown to England at the soonest.

The consignment, which is expected to be delivered in late December, is important because of the demand for teeth under the new ‘NHS’ health scheme.

Cyprus has long been known for producing quality false teeth. The last major international order was to Australia in 1937.
