Tributes to slain French school teacher

The public in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux and other French cities are demonstrating today for freedom of speech.

The meetings are a tribute to the teacher Samuel Paty who was beheaded by an extremist Muslim on Friday, because he had shown Mohammed cartoons to students during a lesson.

The demonstrations are supported by trade unions and political leaders. President Macron’s office announced yesterday that Paty will receive a national tribute at a later date.
