Lebanon Beirut port’s activity falls by nearly half in Jan.-Oct. 2020

The number of containers that have arrived in the port of Lebanese capital Beirut dropped by 42.2 percent year on year to 373,737 in the first 10 months of 2020, Bank Audi’s Lebanon Weekly Monitor reported on Wednesday.

The report attributed the decline to the worsening economic situation which was further exacerbated by the damage caused by the two huge explosions that rocked the port on Aug. 4.

It added that the number of vessels saw a decrease by 23.2 percent to 1,153 over the same period while the quantity of goods fell by 35.9 percent to 3,684 tons.

Meanwhile, the port’s revenues reached 92.4 million U.S. dollars from January to October this year, down by 44.5 percent year on year.
