Israeli cabinet okays full nationwide lockdown

Israel’s cabinet voted on Tuesday in favor of imposing a full nationwide lockdown, shuttering schools and most businesses.

The tightened lockdown is planned to be imposed for 14 days, starting overnight between Thursday and Friday, a government spokesman told Xinhua.

Schools and kindergartens will be closed and all the teaching will be made via distance learning. Most shops and businesses will be closed too.

The Israeli parliament, or Knesset, is expected to give final approval to the new restrictions on Wednesday.

At the start of the cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that the new COVID-19 variant “has gone out of control.”

Israel has entered its third nationwide lockdown on Dec. 27, 2020.
