Problems for Real Madrid as Varane tests positive for COVID

Real Madrid suffered a major setback just hours before the start of the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal at home against Liverpool with the news that central defender Raphael Varane will miss the game after testing positive for COVID-19.

Real Madrid confirmed the news on their official website, explaining the player had given a positive result in tests carried out in “the morning.”

The news means the Frenchman will not only miss Tuesday’s first leg against Liverpool, but also the return match at Anfield next season and also the Clasico at home against FC Barcelona, which could go a long way toward deciding this season’s La Liga title.

Varane’s absence comes at the worst possible moment for Real Madrid given that club captain Sergio Ramos is also missing through injury and leaves Zinedine Zidane with Nacho Fernandez and Eder Militao as the only available central defenders in his first team squad.
