Italy and Qatar discuss defense cooperation

Qatari Minister of State for Defense Affairs Khalid Al Attiyah has discussed with visiting Italian Minister of Defense Elisabetta Trenta means to boost military and defense cooperation, according to reports.

Attiyah received Trenta and her accompanying delegation during an official visit to Qatar, said a statement by the Directorate of Moral Guidance at the Ministry of Defense.

The two sides also discussed the latest regional and international developments, the statement said, giving no further details.

Qatar and Italy are bound by close relations in the security and military fields as part of Doha’s bid to strengthen its armed forces.

The Qatari defense ministry signed in 2016 contracts allowing Italy’s firm Fincantieri to build seven new-generation warships as part of its program to upgrade Qatar’s royal navy.

On June 30, 2018, Attiyah launched the project at a celebration by the company to mark the beginning of operations to build the vessels.
