US smash Japanese invasion convoy off Guadalcanal

Dec 3, 1942: THE United States Navy has smashed a new Japanese invasion convoy off Guadalcanal, in the Solomons, and has sunk six Japanese warships, two troop transports and a supply vessel. Japanese ships sunk included two large destroyers or cruisers and four small destroyers.

American losses were a cruiser sunk and some other ships damaged. The action was fought at night and only preliminary results is are available.

It is known definitely however, that the U.S. Navy has f oiled all Japanese attempts to land reinforcements for their troops fighting to regain a foothold on the vital air base island.
