Ecuador keen to keep manager Alfaro beyond World Cup

The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) will seek to extend the contract of national team manager Gustavo Alfaro after this year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

FEF vice president Carlos Manzur made the comments after FEF elections in which local clubs and leagues voted to maintain Francisco Egas as president.

Manzur told journalists that a priority of the re-elected board was to tie Alfaro to another long-term contract with a view to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Alfaro was appointed manager of the Tricolor in August 2020 following the departure of Jordi Cruyff.

Under the Argentine’s command, Ecuador finished fourth in the 10-team South American World Cup qualifying group – enough to secure a berth in football’s showpiece event for the first time since 2014.

The Tricolor will begin their World Cup campaign against hosts Qatar on November 20 and will also face the Netherlands and Senegal in Group A. ■
