Socialist Party heads for victory in Albanian local elections

The ruling Socialist Party (SP) of Albania is heading towards a major victory in local elections held across the country on Sunday, according to the latest results published by the Central Election Commission (CEC) on Monday.

The State Election Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi told local media that the process of counting votes for mayor has been completed in 34 out of Albania’s 61 municipalities, while vote counting for municipal councils has also started in four municipalities.

According to the results published by the CEC, the SP is in the lead in the majority of Albanian municipalities.

The SP and the opposition Together We Win coalition were represented in the elections.

Voter turnout was 37 percent, according to Celibashi.

Under Albanian law, the counting process must be completed by Monday evening.

A total of 3,650,550 Albanian citizens were eligible to vote in Sunday’s local elections, at 5,211 polling stations across the country. Of this number, 122,545 were first-time voters. ■
