Iranian women who defy laws requiring the mandatory wearing of the hijab and adequate clothing now face harsher penalties, according to a new Amnesty report. The law is intended to “protect the family by promoting the culture of chastity and hijab.”
Violations can result in flogging, fines and severe prison sentences, among other things.
The law also allows for the death penalty for activism, the report says.
“This law has particularly devastating consequences for the most economically disadvantaged in society,” said Diana Eltahawy, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.
The law comes into effect on December 13.
