Building‑safety concerns remain in the spotlight in Cyprus following Saturday’s fatal collapse of an apartment block in the Yermasoyia area of Limassol, which left two people dead.

Fileleftheros reported that thousands of buildings across the island are old or poorly maintained, noting that 56% of all structures — roughly 270,000 buildings — are more than 25 years old. Citing the Statistical Service’s most recent data, updated in August 2024, the paper said 1,440 registered residential buildings were constructed before 1919.

In a separate report, Haravgi said at least 1,292 buildings nationwide are classified as dangerous, according to information it obtained. The paper added that more than 500 of those are located in the city and district of Larnaca.
