Trump says he is considering banning diesel exports as fuel prices threaten midterm prospects

President Donald Trump has said he is weighing a ban on diesel exports “every day” as the White House tries to rein in rising fuel prices that could carry a heavy political cost in next month’s midterm elections.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said a ban on diesel exports could have a “negative impact” on gasoline prices but would lower the price of diesel.

He said the war between Russia and Ukraine, in which both sides are striking energy infrastructure and cutting production and exports, is among the main causes of higher prices. “We think we’re doing very well” compared with other countries, he added.

Trump made no mention of the war against Iran or the Strait of Hormuz.
