Lebanon’s National Meeting of Agricultural Bodies called for stronger measures to protect the country’s olive oil sector.

A recent meeting, attended by committee leaders and representatives of agricultural groups, highlighted the symbolic and economic importance of olive cultivation.

Speakers stressed that olive trees represent a national heritage and a source of resilience for communities affected by ongoing hostilities.

They said safeguarding the sector is essential for food security and maintaining ties to the land.

The committee issued a series of recommendations, including a complete crackdown on adulterated olive oil, a halt to import permits for olive oil and olives, and a request for the standards body LIBNOR to revise labeling rules to clearly identify adulterated products.

It also called for improving domestic production, expanding mechanization to reduce costs, and establishing unified bottling centers overseen by farmers.

Other proposals included classifying olive cultivation as a subsidized crop, strengthening coordination with relevant ministries and consumer‑protection agencies, forming farmer groups across regions, and encouraging the planting of local olive varieties.

Citizens were urged to report sellers of adulterated oil.

The committee also asked the Central Inspection Directorate to investigate alleged corruption involving officials accused of aiding traders and counterfeiters at the expense of farmers and consumers.
