Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked Cyprus to use its presidency of the EU Council to help advance efforts toward resolving the war in Ukraine, according to Cypriot media reports.
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said the government remains ready to “actively support Ukraine and its European path.” The two leaders held a phone call last Thursday at Zelensky’s initiative, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said.
Zelensky congratulated Christodoulides on Cyprus assuming the EU Council presidency and said he plans to attend the official opening ceremony in Nicosia on January 7. He also briefed him on recent developments in the conflict and ongoing diplomatic and peace efforts.
Christodoulides reiterated Cyprus’ support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, saying the stance is rooted in international law. Letymbiotis said backing Ukraine will remain a core priority throughout Cyprus’ six‑month presidency.
Zelensky later wrote on the X platform that he expects “strong European decisions” in the coming months that will strengthen both Ukraine and the wider continent.
Cypriot media reported that Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa are all expected in Cyprus next week, with preparations under way for a four‑way meeting with Christodoulides.
Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos said after speaking with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha that Ukraine remains “at the top of our agenda.” Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Rauna said Cyprus is ready for a successful presidency and has prepared a 19‑point roadmap for its Ukraine‑related work.
