The Water Development Department said Monday that a technical problem at the Larnaca desalination plant over the weekend may lead to reduced drinking‑water supply to reservoirs serving communities and district water boards in Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta.
Efforts are underway to restore full output from the Larnaca plant within the day, the department said.
Until the unit is fully back online, water supply to affected areas is being covered by the Tersefanou and Kornos water‑treatment plants and the Dhekelia desalination facility.
Authorities noted that current storage levels have helped prevent shortages so far: Nicosia’s reservoirs hold 87,750 cubic metres, Larnaca’s 22,000 cubic metres, and the Paralimni–Ayia Napa system 15,000 cubic metres.
Consumers and local water boards were urged to use water responsibly and limit consumption where possible.
The department added that a separate technical issue at the Vasilikos desalination plant was resolved immediately thanks to coordinated action by the Electricity Authority and the Water Development Department.
