No new cases of foot‑and‑mouth disease have been detected in Cyprus, a development veterinary officials described as encouraging.
Sotiria Georgiadou, senior officer and spokesperson for the Veterinary Services, said sampling continues in the three‑ and 10‑kilometer surveillance zones around the infected area, as well as in other locations.
Speaking at the ZINON Coordination Center in Larnaca, she said the three‑kilometer zone includes about 10,000 cattle, 48,000 sheep and goats, and 26,000 pigs.
Georgiadou said 9,000 animals have been vaccinated with doses supplied from the Turkish‑occupied north. Another 50,000 doses are expected to arrive later Friday, while 529,000 vaccines from the European Union are due on Saturday.
Culling and burial of animals from infected sheep and goat herds are continuing, she added.
