Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Klea Papaellina represented Cyprus’ EU Council Presidency at the 2026 European Anti‑Racism Conference in Brussels, stressing that racism remains a significant challenge across the bloc despite long‑standing legal protections.

The conference, co‑organized by the Cyprus Presidency and the European Commission, brought together EU institutions, member states, civil‑society groups, academics and equality bodies to review progress and exchange practices on combating discrimination.

In her remarks, Papaellina said racism continues to undermine core EU values such as human dignity, equality and fundamental rights. She welcomed the adoption of the EU Anti‑Racism Strategy 2026–2030, describing it as part of the Union’s broader push toward an “Equality Union.”

The meeting also assessed progress made under the EU’s 2020–2025 Anti‑Racism Action Plan and discussed implementation of the new strategy at both national and European level.

Papaellina said tackling racism requires sustained political will, strong partnerships and coordinated action across all levels of governance, adding that while the EU has advanced equality protections, more collective effort is needed to ensure that respect for diversity becomes a lived reality for all citizens.
