Consumer Group Alleges Fuel Stations Withheld Full Tax Cut

Cyprus’ Consumers Association issued serious allegations, claiming that several fuel stations failed to pass on the full benefit of the government’s reduction in the consumption tax on fuel.

In a statement, the association said the support approved by the Cabinet “was not fully transferred to consumers,” arguing that part of the reduction was “unjustifiably absorbed” by retail fuel stations. As a result, it said, some operators effectively kept a portion of the subsidy for themselves at the expense of motorists.

The group said that after systematic monitoring of diesel prices, it found that as of 9 a.m. Thursday many stations had not reduced their prices at all, while 97 stations lowered prices by less than 8.3 cents per liter, well below the expected decrease.

The association also voiced concern and disappointment over comments from the Consumer Protection Service, which attributed the reduced benefit to rising fuel prices — a justification the group rejected.
