Cyprus’ Transport Ministry has released detailed figures on the cost of the Paphos–Polis Chrysochous motorway project, responding to recent public debate over its price.

The ministry says the original contract for the Agia Marinouda–Stroumpi section was signed in 2021 for €72.98 million, excluding VAT. During construction, the contractor submitted €36 million in claims and requested a 59‑month extension — demands that all evaluation committees deemed unjustified and legally impossible to accept. Granting the extension, officials said, would have added about €10 million in administrative costs.

That would have pushed the total cost to roughly €119 million, with completion no earlier than 2029 and the possibility of further claims.

The ministry rejected suggestions circulating publicly that the project could be delivered for “under €100 million,” saying the contract figures are published and straightforward.

New bids submitted on 17 April are now being assessed, with officials noting that current market conditions have driven prices higher than earlier estimates. A full picture is expected in the coming weeks. The government says it will consider all legal options, including re‑tendering, awarding or negotiating, if permitted.

The ministry stressed that the Republic of Cyprus has not conceded to unjustified claims, calling this responsible management of public funds.
