Cyprus officials say no cause for alarm after bird flu found at Athalassa park; five people monitored

Health and veterinary officials said there is no reason for concern or panic after a case of bird flu was found at Athalassa Park, where five people have been placed under restriction and monitoring.

They urged visitors not to come into contact with the geese.

The five people who had contact with the infected goose that died tested negative in molecular tests.

Protocols call for 10 days of monitoring, but authorities will extend that to 14 days “to be sure,” she said.

Cyprus is the 19th European country to detect bird flu this year, officials said. Experts described the occurrence as common, noting that cases, particularly among wild birds, are recorded almost every year.

The main challenge, officials said, is keeping the disease away from poultry farms.
