Cyprus’ National Guard is expected to show off upgraded military capabilities Thursday at a parade in the capital marking the 66th anniversary of the country’s independence, including new air defense and drone systems.
For the first time, U.S. and French marines, military police from Egypt and soldiers from Britain will march in the parade. Three specially modified vehicles supporting unmanned aerial systems, with first-person viewing and control capabilities, will also make their debut.
The parade will feature anti-aircraft systems, new unmanned aerial systems, specially modified vehicles, marching units from friendly countries and air forces.
The Israeli-made Barak MX air defense system is expected to be presented for the first time. It is considered one of the National Guard’s strongest assets and significantly strengthens Cyprus’ air defense umbrella.
Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas said this year’s parade “will be upgraded and certainly different from other years.”
