Police in Larnaca are investigating a 58-year-old man on suspicion of domestic abuse after his 79-year-old mother was reportedly locked inside her home for several months under squalid conditions.

According to local media reports, the woman was found living in severe neglect, prompting authorities to intervene.

Police spokesperson Spyros Chrysostomou said the man will face charges under Cyprus’s domestic violence laws, and the case will be filed in court immediately.

The woman has since been placed under the care of Social Welfare Services and transferred to a nursing home.

State TV reports that Maria Kyratzi, director of Social Welfare Services, confirmed that her office received a request from a friend of the woman’s daughter to admit the elderly woman to a care facility. Kyratzi said no welfare officer had visited the woman prior to the incident, adding that no formal reports of neglect had been received before the request.
