President Nikos Christodoulides assured farmers affected by the foot‑and‑mouth outbreak that the government will stand by them, following a wide‑ranging meeting at the Presidential Palace.
Addressing those impacted, Christodoulides said the government and the agricultural sector share “a common goal” and will work together to shape a strategy to contain and resolve the crisis.
He stressed that authorities fully understand the importance of livestock production — not only for domestic supply but also for exports and related industries. The president also recalled the Cabinet’s recent decision on compensation for affected farmers, noting that additional measures will follow.
Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said after the meeting that specific actions were agreed upon and that Christodoulides will raise the issue directly with the president of the European Commission.
Asked about the culling of animals, Letymbiotis said all measures must be examined from a legal standpoint, which is why the Legal Service participated in the meeting.
