Macron to Appoint New Prime Minister Within 48 Hours Amid Budget Crisis

French President Emmanuel Macron will appoint a new prime minister within 48 hours, his office confirmed Wednesday, following the resignation of outgoing Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu earlier this week.

Lecornu stepped down Monday after a breakdown in negotiations over the national budget. He had spent the following days attempting to resolve the political deadlock, engaging in talks with parliamentary factions to assess support for a new government.

In a televised interview Wednesday evening, Lecornu said a new prime minister could be named within two days. “There’s a majority that can govern,” he said, adding that his mission was complete.

Macron, who has been in office since 2017, is facing what many analysts describe as the most serious domestic political crisis of his presidency. The fractured National Assembly has made it increasingly difficult to pass key legislation, including the 2026 budget.

The president’s office said the appointment aims to avoid snap legislative elections, which could further destabilize France’s political landscape. No successor has been named yet.
