Senior British cabinet ministers have urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to set a timetable for his resignation, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, the BBC reported Monday.
The broadcaster said Mahmood is in the minority and the cabinet is split on the issue.
More than 70 Labour MPs have called on Starmer to resign or announce when he will step down. At least four Parliamentary Private Secretaries have also quit.
Sky News reported that Starmer is “weighing up his options” ahead of a cabinet meeting Tuesday.
Pressure on the prime minister has intensified after Labour’s heavy losses in local elections, where the party shed nearly 1,500 council seats in England and lost control of about 40 councils, including long‑held strongholds.
Speaking Monday, Starmer said the results were “very tough” but insisted he would not “walk away.” Asked whether he would fight any leadership challenge, he replied: “Yes… I’m not gonna walk away.”
