The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is urging Israel to swiftly authorize additional humanitarian deliveries to Gaza following the implementation of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
“This is a critical moment for the people of Gaza,” said Martin Frick, WFP’s representative for Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein, in remarks to German media group RND.
Frick said 60,000 tonnes of food are ready to cross into Gaza, with another 100,000 tonnes en route to the region. The supplies could sustain the population for nearly three months, provided access remains safe and consistent.
He emphasized that the ceasefire must lead to secure border crossings and clear safety guarantees for aid convoys. “Every hour counts,” Frick said.
Israel controls access to Gaza and must approve the deliveries and ensure the safety of humanitarian transport, he added.
The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has been in effect since Friday morning.
