Cyprus’ Meteorological Department issued a yellow warning for rain and thunderstorms Wednesday, in effect from noon to 6 p.m. as a low-pressure system begins to affect the island.
Skies will be partly cloudy at first, with isolated showers along the coast and a chance of an isolated storm in the southwest, forecasters said. The weather will turn mostly cloudy, and after midday local rain and scattered thunderstorms are expected, particularly over the mountains, the interior and the north. Activity in the east cannot be ruled out. Hail is likely in any storm.
Winds will blow from the southwest to northwest at 3 to 4 on the Beaufort scale, strengthening to 4 to 5 along the coast. The sea will be slightly rough.
Temperatures will reach about 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) inland, 28 C (82 F) on the coast and 18 C (64 F) in the higher mountains.
Overnight, conditions will stay mostly cloudy, with isolated coastal showers and a possible storm mainly in the west and north. Temperatures will fall to about 19 C (66 F) inland and on the coast and 8 C (46 F) in the higher mountains.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be mostly cloudy, with isolated showers or a storm along the coast in the morning. Activity will spread and intensify after midday, bringing local rain and scattered storms, with hail possible. Friday’s storms could be heavy or prolonged, forecasters said.
Temperatures will drop gradually through Friday, with little change Saturday, leaving readings below normal for the time of year.
