Cyprus defense minister proposes voluntary military service for women

NICOSIA -Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas said he will propose a directive next week allowing women to serve voluntarily in the National Guard, according to a report by Politis newspaper.

Speaking to state broadcaster RIK, Palmas said the first group of female volunteers is expected to begin service by the end of October.

Women who enlist will receive a monthly stipend of €150.

Those who complete their service may be eligible for university scholarships, receive bonus points when applying for public sector jobs, and have the option to continue as contracted soldiers, the report said.
