Christodoulides raises energy security and Mediterranean funding at MED9 summit

President Nikos Christodoulides addressed a broad range of issues relating to stability, security, connectivity and energy sufficiency in the Mediterranean and wider Europe during his interventions at the 13th MED9 summit in Croatia.

The head of the President’s Press Office, Victoras Papadopoulos, said that during the session on preparations for the upcoming European Council, Christodoulides raised issues concerning Europe’s energy security and Cyprus’s contribution in that area.

Christodoulides also stressed the importance of the role of the EU’s Mediterranean member states in strengthening the Mediterranean dimension of its policies.

He added that adequate funding must be secured for issues of concern to Mediterranean member states, and underlined the great importance of the GSI project, noting its benefits for the EU’s energy security and gas supply.

On the sidelines of the summit, the President met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Their discussion focused on developments in the Cyprus problem and the remaining steps for Cyprus’s full accession to the Schengen Area.
