Britain supports a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, but any restart of negotiations depends on the island’s two leaders, UK Minister for Europe Stephen Doughty said.
According to Haravgi, Doughty made the remarks in a reply to a letter from the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK. He said a settlement can only be achieved by addressing the consequences of the island’s division.
Referring to last year’s informal expanded 5+1 talks, Doughty said “important steps” had been taken and expressed hope for new momentum under the UN‑led process.
He stressed that the resumption of substantive negotiations lies with the leaders of the two communities and underlined the importance of Confidence‑Building Measures. Doughty said London remains committed to engaging in efforts toward a solution based on UN Security Council resolutions and political equality, and he thanked UK‑based Cypriots for their continued contributions.
